  1. If all it takes is what Electro- Fogey alludes to in the 1st sentence of his answer then 'god' help the railroads!

  2. The reading comprehension test is easy.  All it is is following directions.  You read a short paragraph and answer a few questions about it, and you can look back to the paragraph while answering the questions.  And yes you will find out if you pass right then.  They send you out when you finish the test, and only call the ones back into the room who passed.  (At least that's how they did it when I applied and interviewed)  They will then setup an interview schedule with the ones that passed the test, usually that afternoon.  When I interviewed it was with a person from the personnel department in Omaha, and a high up manager from the service unit where I was applying.  If you have anymore specific questions, fell free to email me.  Good luck.

  3. If you can create an account on Yahoo, set up an avatar, and post a question on Yahoo Answers, I don't think you will have any trouble with the reading comprehension test.  I'd worry more about your grip strength and how well you can put up with people that are...  let's just say 'abrasive.'

  4. The literacy test will determine whether or not your reading and comprehension skills are at a level to allow you to grasp the intricacies of the information you will need to learn.

The test is easier than actually reading and comprehending rule books, timetables, special notices, general orders, etc.

These are often like trying to read Homer's Iliad in the original Greek.
