Is the reason AGW is so popular among young people the fact that they missed the global cooling scare?

This [cooling] trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century -- Peter Gwynne, Newsweek 1976

There are ominous signs that the earth's weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production - with serious political implications for just about every nation on earth. The drop in food production could begin quite soon... The evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologist are hard-pressed to keep up with it. -- Newsweek, April 28, (1975)

This cooling has already killed hundreds of thousands of people. If it continues and no strong action is taken, it will cause world famine, world chaos and world war, and this could all come about before the year 2000. -- Lowell Ponte "The Cooling", 1976

If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder by the year 2000...This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age. -- Kenneth E.F. Watt on air pollution and global cooling, Earth Day (1970)

  1. That and the public schools, Hollywood and the media are continuously hammering them with GW propaganda.

“According to a recent front-page Washington Post story, one-sided teaching about global warming is taking a terrible emotional toll on children.

For many children and young adults, global warming is the atomic bomb of today…Parents say they're searching for ‘productive’ outlets for their 8-year-olds' obsessions with dying polar bears. Teachers say enrollment in high school and college environmental studies classes is doubling year after year. And psychologists say they're seeing an increasing number of young patients preoccupied by a climactic Armageddon.”

  2. No. Global warming is understood by the younger generations because we understand that science goes beyond a few headlines in the mass media. Anyhow, the 1970's "global cooling scare" is a hoax brought to you by deniers, wishing to spread disinformation. Please tell them that their dishonesty is an insult to your intelligence.

"The scientific consensus in the 1970s about 'global cooling' is a beloved argument of global-warming skeptics -- and [nothing more. So] says a survey of scientific literature between 1965 and 1979. During that time period, seven peer-reviewed articles supported global cooling, while 44 predicted global warming. 'There was no scientific consensus in the 1970s that the Earth was headed into an imminent ice age,' says coauthor Thomas Peterson. 'A review of the literature suggests that, to the contrary, greenhouse warming even then dominated scientists' thinking about the most important forces shaping Earth's climate on human time scales.' Glad that got cleared up."[1]

  3. Probably that and the fact that kids are rarely taught history and have only their lifetime for historical basis.

Liberalism needs scare tactics to work.  Look at how many false scares we've had:  nuclear winter, global cooling, acid rain, bird flu, ozone layer, Asian flu, china syndrome etc etc.  Even DDT was banned for no reason and now millions die from malaria thanks to the environmentalists.

The liberals know that children are more easily scared and won't bother to check that the science is flawed.

Just show a cartoon of a baby polar bear drowning, then show a factory belching out white smoke (water vapor) and the kids will come home screaming at mommie to stop driving the mini-van or she'll kill baby bears.

Exploitation of children is a favorite by the liberal fascists.

It works well for a while, but as they grow up and get out of the government schools they learn the truth and don't fall for these types of hoaxes as much.  Of course if they stay in the colleges their whole lives they may never learn the truth.

  4. Whether or not there was a consensus regarding global cooling is irrelevant. The evidence speaks for itself: global temperatures between about 1940 through 1979 showed a steady decline. That’s not opinion – it’s fact - albeit one the warmies put a lot of effort into trying to discredit.

But to answer the question given, the reason so many young people buy into the AGW scare is because they simply do not yet have enough life experience to know that you shouldn’t believe everything you hear in the media, and be doubly skeptical if it comes from any source associated with Hollywood or a politician.

Another reason is that they do not understand the cyclic nature of global temperature.

  5. Young minds are impressionable ones.

Example: Hitler's Hitler youth turning their parents in to the state......

Those who have been around awhile have seen it all before and can smell a rat from a mile away.

  6. The believers on this forum remind me of the student activists I encountered at university.  They seem to be looking for a purpose in the world, getting involved in radical politics gives them a sense of purpose.  Their intentions are good if a little niave.

Those of us who are a little older can remember a lot of scare campaigns including a lot that were suposed to come true by the year 2000.

  7. The "global cooling scare" lasted all of about 30 seconds.

  8. No, unfortunately, it's because they can't think for themselves, like most people. Plus, it's on TV all the time so in their minds, it must be true!

    *Down with Big Brother*

  9. I'm in my forties and have seen it all.  The mini ice age we were threatened with had the same language as the global warming scare does now.  "If we don't stop burning fossil fuels now, the Earth will inexorably slide into an ice age."  And the reasoning for this was the very snowy winters we'd have in the 1970's.

The debate about global warming and global cooling has been around since the middle 1800's and has gone back and fourth.  Using science as a weapon, AGW is back with a vengeance and couple that with the useless teachings in schools.  You have people that don't bother to analyze what they've been taught.

It's funny because they're the first to question a religion and try to pick it apart, but they accept whole heartedly a nebulous concept that tiny factories are heating up the planet and if we participate in green credits and carbon trading-- all on paper without an actual product being produced-- everything will be fine.

  10. There are multiple reasons why AGW is so popular amongst young people:

1 - They are not so fixed in their ways; they are open to discover new truths as opposed to the "old fogey", "well, in my day, milk cost 5 cents - don't know why I should pay more than that..."

2 - They are less likely to have a vested interest in maintaining a destructive lifestyle

    But, most importantly,

3 - They will have to live in the future longer than old f*rts and would a) like to actually live and b) enjoy it!

And as others have said, there has been more said about global cooling in the last year by skeptics spreading disinformation than there ever was in the '70s!

  11. It's popular among kids because it has been canonized in the socialized school system.  Students are taught "by the book" and "to the test".  If you made Santa Claus part of the curriculum, over a quarter of the kiddies would parrot "T'was the Night Before Christmas" by graduation.

Those of us old enough to have attended a 10 year graduation reunion were fortunate enough to have been taught the Sun warms the Earth, the Earth has gone through countless changes in climate before, and freedom from tyranny is the greatest feat mankind has every achieved.

  12. The young have also missed the acid rain scare, the nuclear winter scare, and the over population scare. Every decade it is something new. The young always think it is different this time.
