  1. The Rem UMC is not necessarily waterproof It depends on the exposure-submersion...

If you try any pay particular attention to a squib load. That means there is no BANG but a small pop. STOP shooting. Unload and run a cleaning rod through the barrel. You are checking for barrel obstructions like a bullet that didn't make it all the way out. If you have a stuck bullet please immediately go to a gunsmith for assistance. and throw the rest of the wet ammo away.

Recommended storage is cool and dry.

  2. If the ammo is labeled 5.56mm NATO and packaged for military sale it is.  If the box says 223 Remington - it is not.

Nearly all ammo labeled 5.56mm NATO is mfp sealed - moisture, fungus, proof - you will see a small amount of sealer around the primer and junction of the bullet and cartridge case that is usually red or purple.  It is never clear because this would be difficult if not impossible to pass a visual inspection.  If your 5.56mm is not visible - it could be a run of accidental clear that was pulled from military production and then sold to the civilian market - look at it under a high power lens - and if it is missing, well, it is not.

A properly sealed military round can be dropped into a hot thermos of coffe at 7am, left all day, and poured out at 4pm and it will fire just fine after a quick dry off of the outiside.

If you would like to seal your bullets like the military does - simply visit a woman's fingernail department in the store - you are looking for a clear teflon based 'top coat'.  Simply apply it to the primer area and immediatly wipe off the excess.  After it is dry - 30-40 minutes - do the same around the bullet to cartridge junction.

    Hope this helps.

  3. yes in general you can get it wet and it will still go bang.

that being said ammo should be stored in a cool dry place.

It's not the momentary exposure or submersion in water that will make ammo go bad  it's prolonged exposure  or submersion that will make it useless.

  4. Remington .223 ammo is not waterproof, but military spec 5.56 mm ammo is waterproof.

  5. If it got wet in the rain it should be ok, wipe dry before loading. And watch for that SQUIB LOAD

  6. "water resistant" is a better term. While most modern ammo can take exposure to moisture/water for a short period, long term exposure will affect the ammo. Anything from rust/corrosion to primers that fail to fire are possible.

    shoot safe
