  1. I would stick with taking the ruler of the house.  I suppose if you want to get more info, you could delve into the decanates, but, I think that adding too many ingredients into the stew tends to confuse many.  Decanates are typically used in planetary placements, not house cusps.

  2. Good question . . .The Ruler of the house is the ruler of the sign . . ..I try not to get caught up in Decans.

  3. The word "ruler" is a modern substitute for the more accurate, but old fashioned "Lord."  The short answer is that if we're looking for the ruler of the entire house, we wouldn't limit our search to the ruler or lord of no more than 10 degrees of that house.

The only other attempt at using something other than the ruler of the sign on the cusp for the entire house is the Arabic use of "almuten" or, as it is sometimes spelled "almutem."  This is the planet that has the most essential dignity in the degree on the cusp.  This is usually, but not always the same as the domicile ruler.  Libra an air sign, is ruled by Venus.  However in day charts, i.e. charts for births when the Sun is above the horizon, Saturn is both exaltation ruler and triplicity ruler and the combination "out ranks," Venus by a point system introduced probably by the Arabs. Therefore Venus would be domicile ruler in all cases, but Saturn would be almuten in some cases and by some medieval astrologers considered to be more influential than Venus.

Using exaltation rulers produces interesting results at times.

  4. Hi DollB

Good question as usual. The ruler of a house is taken in consideration with the ruler of the decan the cusp is in.

    Ex:

If Leo has 2nd decan on a cusp, one would take a Sun-Jupiter approach to his reading. Jupiter rules the 2nd decan and Mars rules the 3rd.

Pushing it one step further, every 5 deg of any sign has a slightly different trait to add to the sign.

Note that some disregard the ruler of decanates but if they are unimportant, why were they introduced into astrology and widely used among the best french astrologers ?

edit... I hope I understand the question clearly.
