  1. The Santa Ana volcano is an active volcano.  It last erupted in 1770, but has had continuous volcanic activity since.  Activity increased in 1992 and has continued in one form or another.

El Salvador has 23 volcanoes clasified as active and many more dormant, inactive or extinct (177 to be exact - "Catalogue of Active Volcanoes of the World", Bohnenberger, 1973). 90% of the country was formed by volcanic materials. All of this in a country the size of the state of Massachusets. This is why El Salvador is called the Land of the Volcanoes.

    the 23 active volcanoes:

    Santa Ana

    Izalco

    San Marcelino

    San Salvador

    El Playon

    Islas Quemadas

    Ilopango

    Conchaguita

    Coatepeque

    San Vicente

    Tecapa

    San Miguel

    Cochagua

    Cuyanausul

    Laguna Seca El Pacayal

    Limbo

    Cerro Las Ranas

    Laguna Verde

    Chingo

    Cerro de Las Ninfas

    Cerro Los Naranjos

    Cerro Chambala

    Usulutan

    Cerro El Taburete

  2. it is active!

  3. Active

I was in Santa Ana Oct. 05 when it erupted.

Went to go see how some friends in Los Planes were and a mudsilde from the event washed out 600 feet of the road.

    It rained lots that month.
