  1. No trains yet.  The closest beach is Boca Chica.  You can get a guagua (a minivan public bus).  Most rides are about 50 cents to a dollar (15-30 pesos) across town.  If someone in your group knows Spanish, have them ask a local where the bus stop is for Boca Chica.  ?Donde esta la parada para la guagua a Boca Chica?  It's pretty touristy there, so you may have to hunt for the cheap places to eat and stay.  In Santo Domingo, there are pensions that run less then $10/night.  The one I stay at is in the neighborhood called Gazcue.  It's clean and in a "safe" area.  Of course, don't go out at night alone or at dawn/dusk.  Take taxi's when you can (apollo company is trustworthy).  They charge 130 pesos during the day and 150-200 at night which is $5-$8.  It costs 5 pesos to make a call.

If you're Americans, you can stop by the Peace Corps office and catch a volunteer for some more advice.  Just show your passport to the guard.  There are tour books, a city map, and always a few volunteers hanging out.  It's open 8-8, 7 days a week.

  2. No, the metro is not open yet to the public, they are still working on it. There are no trains in the Dominican Republic.

And the nearest beach is Boca Chica 45 km from Santo Domingo. You have to take the bus (gua-gua).

    Enjoy it!

  3. no not yet.
