I have co-insurance and deductable for my primary (e.g. 20% of $2000 contract amount). My secondary insurance said the primary has paid the contract amount that secondary would have paid for (e.g. $1600). Therefore, secondary pays $0 to the claim due to the benefit coordination. While primary EOB says it is my responsibility to pay $400, the EOB of secondary says it is not my responsibility to pay $400. The hospital says it is my responsibility to pay $400 regardless what secondary EOB states. It seems like I'm paying premium to secondary insurance for nothing.

  1. I've never heard of secondary insurance picking up co-pays.

I know all insurance's are different... but I've had 3 forms of coverage at one time and I was always responsible for co-payments... my second and third would cover procedures that my primary decided weren't important enough to cover.

  2. Your last sentence answers your question. In most cases a secondary policy will not pay except if they cover something that the primary doesn't cover. However, they will pay if you max out your benefits with the primary. There are a few other cases where the secondary will pay but it's usually not worth the premium.
