"With a proper diet and exercise, people can actually decrease the chances of getting certain diseases and making life more enjoyable."

I was trying to put parallelism in this sentence, but "getting" and "making" kind of sound awkward. Corrections are appreciated.

Thank you.

  1. No, the parallel structure changes your intended meaning. It sounds like you are saying that they will decrease the chances of making life more enjoyable. It is also confusing to have "a proper diet" before "exercise" because you can read it to mean "a proper exercise".

Revise to: "With exercise and a proper diet people can increase life expectancy and enjoyment."

  2. Parallelism is important.  But, the trick is, you have to make the equivalent parts parallel.

With proper diet and exercise, people can actually

    1) decrease their chances of getting certain diseases

    and

    2) make their lives more enjoyable

It's not "getting" and "making" that need to be parallel.  It's the two verb parts that both join up with "can actually".  You want to use a pattern like "influence their first thing this way" and "influence their second thing that way".

With proper diet and exercise, people can actually decrease their chances of getting certain diseases and make their lives more enjoyable.

  3. "With proper diet and exercise, people can actually decrease the chances of acquiring certain diseases and make life more enjoyable"

Decrease and make are the verbs and they are both in present tense.

  4. No, this sentance AND YOU are smelly

  5. sounds good.

  6. Sounds good to me. Nice intro, development, and doesn't sound awkward at all.

  7. "make life more enjoyable"

It would also be better to say "contracting certain diseases" than "getting..."

The word "actually" is a useless embellishment here.  Strike it.
