  1. some shotguns (single shot and SXS) where designed as "back packer" models. They folded all the way in half so they would fit inside a back pack. The last one of them that I had, was  a side by side 410 gauge from spain. It was a nice little shotgun.

  2. I doubt very much if it is broken, the store would not be trying to sell it in a broken condition.* Ask the store manager about it, then you will know for sure.*

  3. Was the foregrip removed

Any single or double will break like that if the wooden fore grip is loose or missing

  4. I would say it is mechanically broke. It should not go that far open.  But then again you didn't mention the make or year. But I would pass it up. If you really want it. Make arrangements to take it to a gunsmith before a complete purchase is made.

  5. There are guns that break completely down, but before they are swung into the fully broken down position there should be a stopping point. Once they reach that point they are essentially hooked to a fulcrum in the receiver. When they reach that point you can "unhook" the barrel by removing the stock (sometimes the stock is removed before the break) or pulling backward on the barrel. What you are describing sounds like the stock is not properly in place or there is some damage to the swing mechanism or the stop. Have  it checked before purchasing it.

  6. Some shotguns and even rifles do break-down by design.  I have a Browning .22 LR semi-auto that breaks down into two pieces for easier storing.
