  1. I think it would be a good purchase. I, my brother, and my dad have all owned (and still do) several Taurus handguns and never, not even once, have any of us had even the slightest problem with any of them.

The 24/7 is a great model. I'm not a huge fan of 9mm as a personal protection round though.

If she's "familiar with guns but no expert" a revolver may be a better way to go. Revolvers are simpler so there's less you have to remember to do if you need to fire one (which is invaluable in high-stress situations), they're more reliable, easier to conceal (which is useful because most women wear more fitted clothing than men).

But if it's a PT 24/7 and nothing else, I'd say it's a safe bet.

  2. The Taurus line of firearms is very hit or miss as far as quality. I have seen some nice ones, and some that were either junk or actually dangerous. We had some of their revolvers in .357 mag come thru the shop that had been miss drilled and the chambers in the cylinder lined up with the flutes (the thinnest part of the cylinder wall) and could have exploded the cylinders. I have had personal experiences with their pistols breaking parts and misfeeding. I realize that they have a lifetime guarantee, which sounds good, but if you are constantly sending it in for repair and then waiting for 3-4 months to get it back (that's how long they averaged for me) then it is not such a great deal. There are better choices. I know they may cost a little more (some a LOT more) but what price do you put on your wife and family and their safety. Some better choices are the springfield XD ( which my wife carries for her ccw) S&W has a nice line of lady smith pistols just as a couple of examples. Truthfully, I would rather buy a bulgarian Makerov in 9x18 makerov  for around $200.00 for her to carry than a Taurus. I still have 2 of them that I use and keep hidden in my vehicles. They have a fairly heavy trigger pull which is good when you are scared or the adrenaline is pumping (prevents you from shooting when you are not ready) is double action, fairly accurate ( mine are very accurate) rugged as all get out and my only complaint was the safety is stiff, but easily lightened up. Don't get me wrong, there are people who love the Taurus, but my experience, and my customers experiences show that it's too chancey to trust to your life.

    shoot safe

  3. A long article, but I highly recommend you read it. at: http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/a...

  4. Just a suggestion, but I would take her along and let HER pick the weapon she wants.

    She MAY surprise you!

Myself, I shoot a .44 and .45 Black powder handgun as well as a .45LC revolver by Ruger.  (I also reload)  I don't consider myself an expert, just proficient.

My stepdaughter has a 9mm taurus.

    I also have a .22 for plinking.
