Is the sony a300 dslr camera good for a beginer?

i want to pick up the hobby of photography and i want to get in to using slow and fast shutter speeds and taking portraits of my girls so for a beginner is this a good camera?

Personally, I"m not a fan of Sony. I'd get a Canon Rebel XSi.

First go to http://www.dpreview.com and read up about cameras, then go to a store to hold and handle several of them. Chances are you'll come across one that YOU like holding the best, and where the settings make the most sense to you.
