If you are buying now then get a ps3. As the previous answers state, it is the only player able to upgrade to the new profile 1.1 and 2.0 for the new picture-in-picture, web enabled content and games features.....which by the way were available on HD DVD since day 1 but that's besides the point.....Get a ps3 if you absolutely have to buy now, otherwise wait till the end of the year and the new profile 2.0 compliant players should be out by the holiday season.

Sony has recently announced at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics show that current models of Blu-Ray DVD players will not be upgradable in software updates and future features such as picture and picture capabilities that will be released in profile 2.0 in the next couple of months.  The current profile is 1.1.

The only blu-ray machine that will be able to upgrade in software features will be the Playstation 3.

I agree with the first guy. Your best bet right now is to get a PS3 so you can upgrade the software. At this point Blu Ray does not have a standard for manufacturing players which is going to create problems in the future.
