Question:

Is the spool of RG6 cable I have from 1999 what I want to use to wire my basement for a HD Dish satellite?

The cable reads TFC-T10 File No E86650 CATV (UL) 6 Series. I bought it from the cable company so it was the "good stuff" at the time. With HD though, is there a newer, faster RG6 standard? How can I determine how fast my cable may be. I am finishing my basement and want to do it right, but if I can use the cable I already have instead of buying new cable, that would be ideal. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  1. should be fine as long as it is coax

the cable standards for coax, speaker wire, and cat 5 cabling have remained solid for a long time

the only changes in cabling tech since 99 is in the cables from the sat box/cable rec. to the tv----dvi has about 4 standards, and hdmi has multiple versions and odd compatiblity issues between older components

rg6 is the same now as it was 10 years ago

  2. Use the RG6. Co-ax cable is co-ax cable. The only improvement over the years has been in the shielding to prevent outside interferance. If you encounter that, replace it with a gold-standard. I don't think you have to. I'm a Radio Shack Associate and have 40 years in Radio/TV experience. See my profile.

  3. yes. all rg6 can handle the sat. specs..

remember that all sat. receivers must have a home-run from either the dish or a multi-coupler. be sure you install the latest "5" satellite dish if you use directv.
