Question:

Is the sulphur in MSM (a dietary supplement) the same as that in Metabisulfites (a food preservative)?

The reason I am asking is that I have joint problems, and would like to try taking the MSM supplement, but I am allergic to Metabisulfites (the preservative). I was just wondering if MSM contains elemental sulphur (found in all living things) and if Metabisulfites contain a different form of sulphur. Help!!

  1. their is only 1 kind of sulfur, what you are allergic to is the metabisulfite compound (which contains sulfur) you are not allergic to the actual sulfur

  2. They're differently different.  MSM is a naturally occurring, sulfur containing organic compound found primarily in fresh fruits and vegetables and in every cell of the human body.

  3. No, not at all. MSM is Methylsulfonylmethane... it's a completely different chemical makeup than the Metabisulfates.

However, if you have a reaction to the Metabisulfates because of the Sulfur (which is rare, but possible), then you would have a reaction to any Sulfur-based product. You should be able to get allergy tested at a clinic if needed, but if that's not an option, I would suggest just trying a small dose (like 200-500 mg) of it. More than likely, you won't have any negative reaction, but it's better to test with smaller doses. Good luck!
