The sun hits the earth more directly the closer to the equator you get.  More direct rays mean the sun has to go through less atmosphere and and it is more intense.  That is why it is generally warmer closer to the equator than at the poles.  Sunburn happens much more quickly in Hawaii than in Alaska.

Its because the sun is almost perpendiculat to our equator.As a result the suns rays have to penetrate less atmosphere near the equator while it is not the case for polar reagions.The earth is thus divided into three zones.The zone comprising the equator is known as the torid zone,the zone at the polar circles is known as the fridgid zone and the zone between these two is known as the temperate zone.
