  1. I live in Connecticut about 20 minutes from New Haven.  I suppose you could find some area of NYC that's similar to that area of New Haven.  But I wouldn't describe the general feel of Yale to be like NYC.  It's a lot small with fewer people.

  2. I grew up in the New Haven area (moved out of CT about 3 years ago). It's a small city compared to NYC, but a big city by CT standards.

The Yale campus is beautiful, with old stone buildings and Gothic architecture. If you've seen the new Indiana Jones movie, they filmed all the exterior shots of Indie's college at Yale. There are neighborhoods adjacent to campus that are crime-ridden and very unsafe. There are some more upscale areas, as well as trendy/snooty shopping. New Haven also has some bars and clubs and the best pizza in the world (I haven't been able to get a decent pizza since I moved away). New Haven's got a great live music scene, as well.

I wouldn't say it's a whole lot like NYC, because it's small and a lot more laid back. But if you want, you can get on the Metro-North train at Union Station and be in Manhattan in about two hours.
