Is the term 'legend' a much over used phrase

the term legend seems to be used continually to describe the better players of yester-year.I think it is used too much and is a way of passing off excellent players..ally McCoist better known throughout the uk for being that funny wee guy from question of sport, charlie nick for being that p.isshead at arsenal etc.etc.

throughout the world of football only dennis law, kenny dalglish(at anfield)joe jordan and maybe billy bremner are remembered by those outwith our shores for their ability.

is it a case of being legends in their own living rooms?..and dont give me the old back patting stories of foreigners giving you the thumbs up in approval at big match's..(they are just saying what you want to hear)

9 and possibly

  1. Legend is definitely far too often used to describe footballers these days. BUT Ally McCoist was without a doubt a Rangers Legend.

  2. legend is a definately over used word..

Scotland have their own legends..Tommy Burns, Jock Stein, Davie Cooper, Ali McCoist for his football not for his cheesy cringeworthy chat up lines on Question of sport. Some of these if asked in another section sadly the answer would be who?

I think us as fans can have their own legends...to me my dad is a legend but I wouldnt think anyone else felt that way???

I hope you understand what I am trying to say here...I have confused myself already lol

  3. nicholas, never a legend. decent young player first time round , money grabbiing and past it when he came back. if he had progressed the way he should have he would have been world class but greed turned his head.

mcCoist , failed at sunderland before comming back to glasgow and never moved again to try and prove himself in bigger stage, so no not a legend.

Souness done it in england and italy big time, they still talk about him initaly so yes legend , same with King Kenny, very few others unless they done it at least in england and possibly overseas too, matbe Jordan?

Off course the entire Lisbon Lions because of the achievment and possibly most of the rangers team who got to the cup winners final in 67 and won it a few years later?

  4. Henrik Larsson

  5. Yes and No, there are plenty 'legends' out there who don't deserve this accolade and the term is used pretty loosely these days.

Legend doesn't 'have' to be a label given on ability alone, a player who dedicated his whole (or large majority) of his career to the one team (without being an 'outstanding' talent) deserves to be talked of as a legend within the club or someone who helps their side obtain an achievement which without them was virtually impossible too.

Bit harsh to drag McCoist into this and he IS a Rangers and Scotland legend in my opinion, his goal scoring ability for both club and country was immense and without his goals, our Nation wouldn't of qualified for at least 2 major Finals' appearances.

England will never give him the credit he deserves for the obvious reason... he is Scottish and proud of it but for me, if to compare with England, he has to be up there with the likes of Gary Lineker

Charlie Nicholas? Your spot on, great player (on his day) at club level but to be put up as a 'legend'? Nah, not for me.

Wonder if Celtic fans place Charlie up there on a  level par with Henrik in the legend stakes?

  6. Yer d**n right mate!

Over used I heard someone talking Gary Bollan as a legend got to draw the line somewhere athough i think Ally is a bit of a legend as he ipetimises Scottish football.

  7. Alot of big names

    Very few "legends"

  8. Legend is most definitely an over used term.  There might be some good players of yester-year but only a few legends of the game world-wide.

  9. one of celtics favourite sons and a true celtic legend is kirk broadfoot, god bless you captain kirk!!

  10. i'm a legend.

  11. legends-bobby moore, geoff hurst and martin peters. and maybe pele if hez lucky
