Question:

Is the term 'metrosexual' an example of sexism in today's society?

Wikipedia says metrosexual is "a neologism generally applied to heterosexual men with a strong concern for their appearance." Does anyone else think that this is plain sexist? Why is it wrong for men to care for their appearance or how they look? For example, when it was picture day last year I looked in a mirror to see how my hair looked. I wanted a good picture with good hair, but my female friend said "You're so feminine! Metrosexual much!" I was very upset! Does anyone think the term 'metrosexual' should be eliminated since it just screaming sexism views? What do you guys think?

  1. I don't think so. =]

  2. Yep, I think that's a rude term. There's nothing wrong for men to care about their appearance, too many don't care at all.

  3. I'm not sure if by saying "What do you guys think?" you were just asking the males for their opinions.  But anyhow, I think that metrosexual is sexist, as it does reinforce a masculine stereotype for men.  I don't think there's anything wrong with a man caring about his appearance, and in fact I appreciate very much the care my husband takes for himself to make sure that he looks good. As for your friend, I don't think that she's trying to second guess your sexuality, or tell you to look bad. She is probably just giving you some gentle teasing because she likes you. Sometimes, people will say inappropriate things, because they are in the company of those they like and trust, so try not to get too upset.

  4. The term, Metro sexual does not mean feminine...your friend mis-used the term by applying it toward being feminine,Caring about your appearance in no way makes you girly. I think it is a passing phrase...as more men become aware of their appearance and take care of themselves it will just become the norm with no need for a label. And that is happening more and more all the time...my 14 year old son and his buddies all care alot about their appearance as do all of my 2 daughters Guy friends ranging in age from 14-22...so I wouldn't worry about it~~Aloha~~

  5. i think i had a friend tell me that merosexual is when you act gey or L*****n but your not.

  6. It is not so much sexist as it is stereotypical of society. People like to come up with stereotypes.

  7. Wikipedia is not always correct becaus people can go right in and edit all of the information very easily so look it up on http://www.dictionary.com/ for a real reference but it most definitely is sexist

  8. I've never thought the term "metrosexual" was meant to be offensive. you're right, there's nothing wrong with a well-groomed man ;]
