Is the term "Beta Israel" a misnomer? Please explain, if you want to get credit for your answer.

  1. Amharic is a West Semitic language, a fairly close cognate to Hebrew.

    "Beta Israel" means "House of Israel" and is the term Ethiopian Jews prefer to describe themselves. The more commonly heard term "Falasha", means "strangers",  and is considered derogatory.

    If by "misnomer", are you asking whether these people are legitimately Jewish? Rabbinic authorities say Yes, and by the Israeli "Law of Return" most of them have emigrated to Israel.

    "beta yisrael" is the name of the jewish communities in Ethiopia and is not derogatory at all
