  1. Most Cable companies will convert the digital signal to analog, but if not, then the converter box will be needed.

  2. NO the government "coupon" converter box uses an ATSC tuner for over- the-air TV stations.

A Digital cable box uses a QAM tuner.

The frequencies for over the air and digital cable are different thus the different type of tuners are used.

Cable TV customers only need a converter box to get scrambled digital signals. NO box is needed for basic cable TV unless the cable TV company requires it.

  3. The Tv converter is to convert the new signal that will be used instead of the analog waves used now. If you have cable, or any dish you don't need the converter box, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to apply for the 2 free $40 copuons the governemnt is handing out for any additional tv's u have that don't already have a conveter built in it.After Feb 2009 all tvs w/o a box, cable or a dish will not show a picture.
