Is the type of surfboard repair gel like Solarex that quickly hardens in the sun any good?

Yup. It's great for small dings and cracks. I use it all the time.

absolutely! just have to sand it when its dry to make the board smooth with a nice finish again 8) but if its a big gash and you aint that good, i would suggest bringin it in to a board repair shop and leave it to the pros

Yeah, it has worked well for me. You'll just need some sandpaper to smooth it out once it's dried.
