Is the universe a design or is it random?

Is the universe a design or is it random? Seems to me, if so many theories and mathematical formulas can be applied to something, it has purpose and design, there is a certain amount of premeditated artificiality but maybe that's just a human interpretation.

  1. Neither.

People assume that there's only 2 choices - it's either designed or entirely random.

The universe has evolved in a highly complex fashion - neither by chance nor by intelligent design. But the actual explanation is beyond comprehension at the current time.

Those theories and mathematical formulas are not just made up out of the blue. The mathematics is natural and not 'invented' like you seem to suggest. Mathematics is discovered, not thought up.

For instance if you use a tape measure to measure the sides of a right-angled triangle, you will find that if you squared the length of the hypotenuse, it would add up to the sum of the two lengths of the other two sides squared. It works naturally.

  3. it's surely a design.

but like that we cannot imagine at now time.

but it may be sprinkled with time.

  4. There is nothing about the universe to show, prove, or verify that it is designed or has a purpose.

The fact that we are here simply means that the conditions are right for our existence.  It is pure arrogance and childish ego centrism to think that means that the universe was designed for us.

Any purpose or design we might believe is something that we humans impose upon the universe.  If we believe there is a God that designed and made the universe that God exists only in our imaginations.

  5. design

  6. The universe is too large to calculate. If we could, it would no doubt take far too long- and even if we were able to, we would most likely only discover more beyond what we'd calculated, some part we'd missed.

Once the days of Futurama arrive, I'll let you know. We might know then.

  7. This is a false dichotomy. The choice isn't just between 'design' and 'random'. There is at least one other option: the universe is the way it is because that's the only way a universe can be.

  8. I'm certainly no scholar! although I'm called wise one lol. But whatever little wisdom I do have tells me, that if there is a design, there's also a designer! Or if there's a creation, there must be a creator. If you look at the food chain you can't help but observe the perfect in dependency. That can't be random! P.S. I saw the wisdom of God the other day while I was observing a turtle and a snail. God knowing the slow pace he created them so He was compassionate to them by giving them mobile homes, because He knew with their slow pace, if they had to leave their homes like other animals they would    take forever! Just God's wisdom.

  9. Those "theories and mathematical formulas" came from humans in the same way religion and philosophy came from humans... so is it right to assert the validity of one over the other?  Everything humans propose as an explanation for all this has an equal shot at being true.

If the universe is a design... who designed it?  This intertwines a Creator with the mathematical order of the universe... but where did that Creator come from?  If the universe is random, what's the point of life? what you're really questioning is fate v. free will.  design = fate, random = free will.

Personally, I think it's a combination of the two.  Each decision we make, we think we have free will, we think we are free... but every movement is governed by some mathematical equation, some law of physics... so we are actually operating under some sort of a design.  Example:  you go for a run... you think you are doing this by choice.  But this choice you made was actually governed by the laws of nature... you thought, "I think i'll go for a run..." the messages were sent through tiny neurons in your brain... you get the idea.   Going for a run is a simple example.. but when your brain is sending you conflicting messages.. ie your conscience (which I believe is God) vs. your ego (self.. whatever you want to call it) the laws of nature, again, give you the ability to chose.

    sorry if I've confused you

  10. Neither...  It just IS...

  11. The universe is to huge and random, but the probability make it so just as it was designed.

  12. There doesn't have to be a reason for everything, nature may have just formed in its way from the base of the universe - this is the part of the universe, its origin, we're investigating.
