  1. the universe is expanding, and we WILL NOT be moving close to the sun, in fact the distance between celestial bodies are actually getting farther away

  2. Yes the universe is expanding and no we aren't moving closer to the sun.

What's actually happening is our whole galaxy, including our sun is moving "outward" together in a bunch.

It will all stay together because of it's gravity as eri , above, has said . The Milky Way will get farther apart from other galaxies (except for Andromeda which is close enough to interact with our gravity) but nothing "inside" of the Milky Way will change due to expansion.

The way some people describe it is to think of our universe as a loaf of raisin bread. The dough expands but the raisins (which are our galaxies) don't break apart themselves, they just travel farther from   the other raisins.

And it's all happening on a scale that the human race will  , no doubt, be long gone before it ever effects us, if it ever would.

    Don't worry:)

  3. yes the universe is expanding, and it has been proved, we know we are not moving towards the sun because if we were then the length of the year would be changing, and we would all be boiled alive by now if we were, also the laws of physics wont allow it, for us to have a fixed length year then we must remain at a constant distance. Except for one or two Galaxy's very close to us every single galaxy is moving away from ever other galaxy, when people say that every point is moving away from every other point it is not meant to be used on a scale less then the distance between Galaxy's

  4. No,  we know the universe is expanding because stars we take pictures of.  The have a shift in their light color which shows that the wavelengths of the light are changing.  This means that the light is moving away form us, like the Dopplar effect.

  5. Yes, the universe is expanding.  Galaxies are moving away from each other.  However, local gravitational effects overcome the expansion, which is why our galaxy and solar system remain intact.  No, we are not moving closer to the Sun.

  6. You need to clarify this question... sometimes its hard to get your question across the first time so you should reword.

I will answer as best I can though. What is meant by the universe expanding is that space is expanding. Every moment the space in between you and and everything else gets larger, but it is not noticeable over short time frames and short distances like the ones we are accustomed to. Not even the distance between the Earth and the Sun is sufficient. Only by analyzing the distance of galaxies and the speed they are going measured by the redshift of their light we can tell that everything is expanding away from us at speed directly proportional to their distance from us.

Now, this could mean two things. Either we are the center of the universe and every galaxy is accelerating away from us or the galaxies aren't actually moving and it is actually the space in between galaxies getting larger. The Earth being the center of the universe would have sounded good to a church astronomer 1000 years ago, but today we know that is no where near probable.

  7. Whether the universe is expanding or not is still not known.  There are theories both ways, but none of them are provable.

But if the WHOLE universe were expanding, we'd be getting farther away from the sun, not closer.

But the fact is, the Earth is not significantly moving in relationship to our sun.  Throughout the year we get close and farther from the sun (we're closer in winter, by the way...) but ON AVERAGE we stay about 93 million miles away.

That's about 8.5 minutes at light speed.

There is no reason to believe that this will change for another few million years or so.
