Question:

Is the use of "big" and "very big" acceptable here? "the rain is big, but not very big."?

the rain could be small, big, or very big. is this therefore a correct sentence?

PS - i do not need suggestions for ALTERNATE sentences, i just want to know if this sentence is correct, thanks.

  1. I don't think you can describe rain as big, maybe rain DROPS as big.


  2. You don't use the word "big", but you can use the word "heavy".

    So you can say: "The rain is heavy, but not that heavy" or better: "It is raining heavily, but not that heavily".

  3. It makes sense as a sentence, but you'd never describe rain as big.

  4. No, sentence is not correct. As stated in a previous answer you could describe rain drops as big (or fat) but not the rain as a whole. Rain is described in amount rather than size. How much rain is coming down is the question.

    It's raining, but it's not a downpour.

    It's drizzling, but not raining heavily.

    It's sprinkling, not raining cats and dogs.
