Question:

Is the wall furnace in my apartment heating my water heater, or vice versa, or are they separate?

I recently turned off our heating furnace in our apartment's living room because it was so hot out and it was still radiating some heat even with the thermostat turned off.

After a few days I noticed the hot water heater, which is in the hallway around the corner from the furnace, was also turned off (it wasn't warm and wasn't making a sound). I noticed its pilot light was turned off.

Is this because I turned off the furnace? Am I going to have to turn the furnace back on in order to keep the hot water heater running? Do they have separate pilot lights that I have to turn one on at a time? Our landlady is slow to respond and it's not an emergency in this warm weather, but I'd like to know what I did and what I can do.

  1. They are 2 separate units. If the gas valve on the water heater was off. then just look for an in-line gas valve. Turn valve on. Open panels at bottom of water heater. turn gas valve of water heater to the pilot position. Put a match under the thermocouple, depress the red button on gas valve, hold red button down for 1 full minute. It should stay lit at that point. replace the covers, turn gas valve k**b to On and you should have how water in 30 minutes.

On the heater just turn the control of gas valve to the off position.
