Is the way back closer?

Why is the way back always feels closer than the way to something?

Whether it be on bike or on foot the way back is always closer.

I have clue why.

a. You're in good physical condition, and are not so tired that the way back doesn't seem harder.

b. You now know the way, and can get back without detours.

c. The traffic is lighter when you turn around.

d. You were smart enough to start by heading upwind first.

e. After walking out to the observatory and seeing some amazing sights, there's a new spring in your step.
