    Thus, the Pope will visit Australia. The pope is the leader spiritual of Roman catholics.

    -If you are referring to THE Pope, the Catholic Pope from Vatican City, then yes, it would be capitalized

    -If you are referring to someone with the title of "the Pope" and that is how he/she is referred to, then it is capitalized

    -If you are talking about someone whose name is "Pope"

    -If you are not using "the" ("Pope" vs "the Pope")

    NO:

    -If you are being generic about the term "pope" and not referring to a specific person with the title

    -If you are not talking about the title of Pope

    -If you are talking about the office of the Pope and not the Pope himself
