Is the world currently in el nino or a la nina?

We have been going through a La Nina.  This is why most areas have recorded record snow fall for this past winter.  La Nina is coming to an end now.  La Nina could have an affect on severe weather season.

La Nina right now.  The SST (Sea surface temepratures) in the equatorial Pacific have been at least -0.5C for at least the past 3 consecutive monthly periods

your answer is quite wrong.   WR never said we were leaving La Nina.  Even though some of the indicies show a possible change to El Nino this does not look likely to occur.  If anything there is a good chance we experience La Nina conditions through the upcoming winter season.  Chances are though the Nina would be a very weak Nina.

As far as it having a big affect on severe wx season that is highly incorrect.  We have had absolute c**p for severe wx since the month of February.  Yes there have been some localized events such as the VA event but besides that there has been really nothing since the Super Tuesday Outbreak.

As WR said we are leaving a La Nina right now and definitely affect severe weather this year, and won't probably completely disappear from the Pacific until early fall of 2008. Then I would say by winter 2009 and into 2010 an El Nino will develop, but the strength we won't know.
