I'm arguing with a friend and while I LOVE everything Star Trek I honestly think Star Trek's view of earth a bit too much of a utopia to be realistic. Although I now they were in different Time eras, I think movies like Blade Runner shows a more comprable example of where we are headed, technology being completely infused with culture including the street and crime which today is getting worse in the cities where cyberpunk would start.

with things like cell phone sniffing, tumbling, organ black markets (soon to be cloned ograns), cable TV signal hijacking, pleasure dolls, Wifi leaching, hacking, cipher brute forcing, GPS, reverse engineering, software p****y and emulation becoming things everyday unskilled kids are doing , the world is going more towards blade runner than star trek, not to mention nasa is sitting on it's ***.

be sure to state blade runner or star trek so I can have a count

  1. Blade Runner, no doubt. As soon as the pollution from China and India gets to the west, the rain and cancer rate will no doubt  start increasing.

  2. Logans run?

  3. I am a big fan of Star Trek also, but I do agree that it is an idealistic look at the future.  From what I have read, Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek with the idea that future would be devoid of racism, sexism, and intercultural turmoil.  That's why TOS had a really diverse crew, with a black woman right after the Civil Rights conflicts, and a Russian man even during the height of the Cold War.

But yeah, I would have to agree with the BLADE RUNNER future.  I think humans are just too greedy and opportunistic to ever be able to acheive a Utopian society on par with the Star Trek universe.

  4. Star Trek philosophy is sweet, nice and hopeful. Bladerunner is grim, gritty and more realistic. We are headed for weird  cultural slavery and not cool, enlightened star trek stuff. Check out Jerry Pournelles mercanary series.

  5. Definitely more toward Blade Runner than Star Trek, unfortunately.

  6. I see a world that is run by corporations and resembles the Medieval times with Lords and Peons.

  7. I'd say blade runner, too much clutter! I'd also say we're moving into a "Brave New World" utopia, with soma aka media and consumption and lots of s*x!
