  1. Depends on the state you live in as well.  In Maryland the homeschool parent has to do a certain percentage of the teaching of the child to be considered homeschooling.   Otherwise it's considered private school.

You didn't mention your age/grade.   there are correspondence schools like Penn Foster available, and the American School.   As someone else mentioned, your parents don't have to teach you during the 'day' - also - if you do most of the book work on your own, they can go over the things you need help with in the evening, this would still be homeschooling.    But I would strongly recommend an adult be near to supervise  - you wouldn't want issues with a truant officer.

  2. Not unless your parents have a lot of money and can hire a private tutor.

You might look into an online program. See if http://www.k12.com is in your area or Connections Academy. If neither of those are, then try doing a search for

    yourstate virtual school

    yourcity virtual school

  3. As the other posters have commented, hiring a private tutor can be prohibitively expensive. They have to make a living at the job and if they spend much of the day at your home with you being the only student, there isn't a way to spread the costs out among multiple students.

You may need to look to a multi-student situation. There are online classes where you can still be at home if you wish. You just log in to a website or an online classroom for instructional time. Levels of interaction and support for this type of class varies widely, so research it well before enrolling. It is quite possible to have an online class with a 'teacher' where you are still working on your own just as much as you would if you had never enrolled and instead studied on your own. Others are great with a live teacher teaching the content and other homeschool students there live with you in the online classroom. Icing on the cake is that many of these teachers are available for extensive evening and weekend drop-in office hours in their online classroom so you can get help with homework immediately if you need it. The reason for this is because they can be at home with the online classroom set to ring a bell if someone stopped in. It isn't the same as sitting in an office away from home for hours.

Many cities have homeschool co-ops where you meet with other homeschoolers for classes at someone's home or in a public building such as a church. A few co-ops are exploring using online classrooms to hold classes so that there is daily support and then getting together once a week or so for hands-on activities such as labs.

If you are old enough, community college classes can be another helpful option.

Working on your own isn't as impossible as it may seem. Many of the homeschool curriculum options are designed to be used by the student directly. If you do not understand a concept, an internet search will often turn up a resource that will clear it up for you. Some students love this sort of independence and they have the maturity to get the work done. If you feel like you would burn-out doing the course work on your own or wouldn't have the discipline to keep busy at the work, be sure to keep your parents in the loop of accountability.

If the online classroom idea mentioned earlier sounds interesting, let me know and I will send you a link to the one we use for our homeschool co-op. It will let you get a feel for what can be done in one. Just contact me through my Yahoo Answers profile.

  4. Visit www.pdlpioneer.net......... Georgetown Wesleyan University provides quality and affordable online degree programs so you need not spend more than you have to....

  5. This is usually only done if there is a medical condition that requires the child to stay at home; it's called homebound.  A friend of mine's son is in a situation like this right now, he's receiving homebound instruction while going through chemotherapy.

Depending on how old you are, you may be able to be responsible for the majority of your own work.  There are several curriculum companies that offer DVD, satellite, and online instruction that will teach you if your parents are unable to.  As long as you are old enough to stay home alone and can motivate yourself to complete the work, this could be what you're looking for.

Otherwise, your parents would need to hire a tutor; this can get really expensive, though.

Keep in mind that homeschooling doesn't need to happen during regular school hours; your parents can teach you outside of their work hours, and you can do your work when it's good for you (like while they're at work).

  6. it's called tutoring.

  7. Another option to consider is this:

In some states, you can arrange to have someone else (not necessarily a certified teacher) do the teaching.  Some people will find another homeschooling family who is willing to oversee the student while the parents are at work.  If the homeschooling family has a child around the same age, they may be able to just include you in on that child's lessons.

Try contacting local homeschooling support groups to see if there's a local family willing to work with you in this way.  (They'll want some kind of payment, most likely, for their time but it would most likely be far, far less than a private tutor would want.)
