And when doing so, how do you keep the cracks or (lines) From showing back up.I hate paneling but I am on tight budget as well. Please give details on this.

  1. I've decorated over panel with paper and plaster of paris. I used butcher type paper torn in irregular sheets dipped in plaster of paris and hung on the paneling. It is also easy for kids to help. Once on there you can add on extra plaster and do a wet paint fresco that would have a watercolor quality.

  2. Easy method: prime the paneling.  Then skimcoat with joint compound.  Allow to dry, and apply a second light coat.  Allow this to dry, then sand as needed.  Prime again, and paint.  It will look great.

  3. You can use sheetrock mortar to fill in the lines, but if you have lots of paneling that isn't very sensible as it would take forever to do all those seams. You could paint over the panels, as long as you prime it first with something like Kilz (ask for it at Lowe's/Home Depot). It will cover the wall with what looks like white paint, but it will kill the dark color of the panels and make them ready for regular paint. I have seem in lots of home magazines that panel and painted panel is becoming very popular again. Good luck!

  4. i used a good quality wallpaper..it lasted for yrs till i could afford taking it down

  5. I did this in my basement

You can use either wood filler, or joint compound (plaster of paris) to fill in the lines...sand lightly...some people recommend priming (I didnt bother)...and then paint!

Looks just like a regular wall, and well worth the tedious work in the end.

You will be happy that you didnt just paint it...although that would be better than what'cha workin with now! :)
