I have a friend who is wonderful with kids. She is smart, creative and very personable. She has tried and tried again and cannot pass a college level math course... she has a 3.9 GPA in all of the other classes she has taken but cannot overcome the math. Her dream is to become an elementary school teacher and I would love to help her. Is there a major, at any university, that will satisfy the qualifications necessary to teach without college level math.?

  1. Sometimes you can fudge the math part by taking a course of equal acceptance.  For example, a philosophy course can sometimes be taken as a math credit.  I can't do math past grade 9 and that is why I dont teach it.  I can however teach one heck of a grade 1-6 math lesson!  Have her contact the registrars office to see if she can take any other class that will count towards a math credit

  2. No.  You have to know some math in order to be in college, or even in high school for that matter, and you definitely can't get a college degree without passing math.  Is it Intermediate Algebra?  That's all I needed for my A.S.  Has she tried private tutoring?

  3. No.  Elementary school teachers need to teach math!  If she can't pass a basic college math course, sorry, but she really shouldn't be teaching kids.  Tell her to get a tutor!
