I was wanting to get a tattoo in gaelic script (or something cool like that), and it occurred to me that a verse from the Book of Kells could be cool. I was hoping to find the "Be ye not conformed to this world" verse, but that verse is from Romans 12:2, and the Book of Kells does not contain the book of Romans. Does anyone know of a cool old version of the Bible that would have this verse? And where I could find it?

  1. I dont know about an illuminated bible but I can tell you what the passage is in Irish.

(Im assuming you want Irish as opposed to the other Gaelic languages Scots and Manx because you mention the Book of Kells)

In the Biobla Naofa (Bible in Irish) Romans 12:2 is,

"Ná leanaigí patrún an tsaoil seo"

Which means "Dont follow a pattern in this world"

The Book of Kells is written in is Insular Majuscule so you could just write the passage using that style.

(Saoil means life but is used in the bible to mean world)

  2. The book of kells and other illuminated manuscripts basically just decorate the first letter of the first passage, so I doubt you'll find that particular verse outside of a sewing sampler.

So look for a decorated B out of the book of Kells and just graft it on to the rest in a font you like.
