Is their any religious significance to why we stand when "Alleluia" is sung?

I was just wondering why we happen to stand in church while "Allelulia" is being played?

    had dozed off, but was suddenly awakened by the Alleluia

    Chorus.  Startled, he leapt to his feet, the audience followed,

    and it became an instant tradition.
