  1. Tesco does a 'free from' range which has loads of stuff like pasta, cereal, desserts, biscuits etc.


  2. Yes - the free from ranges in the major supermarkets - there is usually part of an isle devoted to wheat free or milk free products.

  3. Yes, there are 'free from' ranges in most major supermarkets (I live in the UK, btw).

    If it's for a medical reason (coeliacs, etc) you can get wheat-free products on prescription, and it doesn't cost as much as supermarket foods which tend to be a bit more expensive than normal bread.

  4. Why sure at the grocery store. Expensive though. Here are a couple of recipes - if you want to make it yourself!!

    Alison's Gluten Free Bread --

    INGREDIENTS

    1 egg

    1/3 cup egg whites

    1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

    1/4 cup canola oil

    1/4 cup honey

    1 1/2 cups warm skim milk

    1 teaspoon salt

    1 tablespoon xanthan gum

    1/2 cup tapioca flour

    1/4 cup garbanzo bean flour

    1/4 cup millet flour

    1 cup white rice flour

    1 cup brown rice flour

    1 tablespoon active dry yeast

    DIRECTIONS

    Place ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select cycle; press Start. Five minutes into the cycle, check the consistency of the dough. Add additional rice flour or liquid if necessary.

    When bread is finished, let cool for 10 to 15 minutes before removing from pan.

    Sweet Corn Cakes ---

    INGREDIENTS

    1/2 cup butter, softened

    1/3 cup masa harina

    1/4 cup water

    1 1/2 cups frozen corn kernels, thawed

    1/4 cup cornmeal

    1/3 cup white sugar

    2 tablespoons heavy cream

    1/4 teaspoon salt

    1/2 teaspoon baking powder

      

    DIRECTIONS

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

    In a medium bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer until creamy. Beat in the masa harina and water until well combined.

    Put the corn in a blender or food processor and coarsely chop on low speed. Stir the corn and the cornmeal into the butter mixture. In another bowl, mix together the sugar, cream, salt and baking powder. Combine the two mixtures until well blended. Pour the batter into an ungreased 8x8 pan.

    Cover the pan with foil and place into a 9x13 inch pan filled 3/4 inch high with hot water. Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the cake comes out clean. Remove small pan from water and let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

    Easy Rice Bread ---

    INGREDIENTS

    2 1/4 cups white rice flour

    1 cup brown rice flour

    2 1/2 teaspoons xanthan gum

    1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin

    3 tablespoons superfine sugar

    1 1/2 teaspoons salt

    1 tablespoon egg substitute

    1/2 cup dry milk powder

    2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

    3 eggs

    1 teaspoon cider vinegar

    3 tablespoons walnut oil

    1/2 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)



    DIRECTIONS

    To help insure success have all ingredients at room temperature before proceeding. Combine the white rice flour, brown rice flour, xanthan gum, and salt. Mix very well. The flours need to be completely combined.

    Combine the gelatin, sugar, egg replacer, milk powder, beaten eggs, vinegar and oil. Beat until well combined.

    Combine the flour mixture, egg mixture and yeast together and beat well. A standup mixture works best for this. Add tepid water to dough if mixture is to dry. The dough should be somewhere between a normal bread dough consistency and a batter.

    Pour into greased 9x5 inch bread pan and allow to rise in a warm, still place until doubled in bulk. Bake in a preheated oven at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) until crust is a light to medium brown. Cool ten minutes in the pan, then to room temperature outside the pan before slicing.


  5. I've seen gluten-free tortillas... usually in health food stores.  Or make your own.

    Cornbread (no sugar, or flour)

    ¼ cup bacon grease, vegetable oil or shortening

    2 cups cornmeal

    ½ tsp baking powder

    ½ tsp baking soda

    1 tsp salt

    ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper

    1½ cups buttermilk

    1 large egg, lightly beaten

    5 Tbsp. melted unsalted butter

    Preheat the oven to 450 degree F. Place the bacon grease in a 10-inch black cast iron skillet and swirl to coat the sides and bottom evenly. Place skillet in the oven to heat.

    In a bowl, combine the cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and pepper and mix well. In a small bowl, combine the buttermilk, egg, and melted butter. Add to dry ingredients and stir just to combine. Remove the hot skillet from the oven, carefully swirl to evenly distribute hot grease, and quickly pour the cornmeal batter into the skillet.

    Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until firm and golden brown on top. Let sit for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a cutting board. Cut into wedges and serve hot with butter on the side.

  6. erm let me think yes you can make bread with other grains, including rice and oats! and Anything is better than the white Chemical stuff that you get from supermarkets!

  7. My sister is gluten intolerant.  She uses nut flours.  You may have to check out organic or health food stores.  They may also have recipes to use it. It will probably be a little pricier than whole wheat flour.  But for my  sister, it is well worth it.

    Also, with regard to gluten intolerance, check out the ingredients of products carefully.  She loves Chines food and used soya sauce.  She would have problems then.  She finally found out that wheat is used in the making of most soya sauces.  I think that she finally found one that didn't.
