  1. This gives a lot of information.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/mai...

I remember getting a good tip from Delia Smith about burying new potatoes in an airtight tin in the soil as and when they are available and digging them up at Christmas. I tried it and it worked!

  2. hi india , i'd go with what lillypo said , but a little tip  if you remove the flower heads it put's more growth into the spuds !!!  i'm on the east coast of ireland ,and have an organic veg patch i've just started so the tips are flyin !! i think i have the start of blight on my spuds but i'm tackling it , !!lol i think !! .. god luck , and i'd plant a bit earlier than nv for xmas if your weather is anything like ours , were gonna go with a plant in mid oct just to be sure ... regards mia

  3. Well yes there is so why not grow your own potatoes in a either in grow bag or large container. They will be ready for christmas if you plant them about the beginning of November.

Jusy buy a bag of tatties and let them chit. To do this you put them on a tray in dark place and cover with newsparer turning them gently once a week taking care not to damage the shoots. It usually takes about 10 days to a forthnight to chit properly...so this will be about the middle of October you need to start chitting them.

Then plant them in good compost or soil about 4 inches deep and then as soon as the shoots start coming through you cover the shoots with soil so as stop them from going green you do this until the shoots push through again.

Once the shoots have flowered and the leaves start to wilt then you can harvest them and Voila! You have lovely new tatties for Christmas and New Year.

I would try and get hold of either King Edwards; Maris Piper  or Charlotte potatoes for chitting.
