  1. I've seen solar panels for sale up to 50 volts, but they aren't switchable.

IIRC, nominally "12 volt" panels can produce up to 17 volts or so on an open circuit.  But your charge controller should be designed to handle this, so maybe it just failed for reasons of its own.

  2. Yes there are many sizes and voltages of solar modules

However, I think you problem was not from voltage but more likely to be that you put too many amps on too small of a controller.

Charge controllers come in many sizes for voltage and amps.

You can get MPPT controllers that can handle up to 150 volts and up to 80 amps. Or just reglar controllers as small as 4 amps on 12 volts.

Is there a chance you put a solar module that was 5 amps or maybe 7 amps on a charge controller that could only handle 4 amps?

You must have a controller that is made for the voltage and amps you are going to be putting on it.

If you hooked the wires up wrong you could have burnt it out as well.

  3. Yes, there are 12 and 24 volt models, and 48 too.

12 volt models are less susceptible to the problem of having part of the panel in shade. However, if you put 12 volt panels in series to produce 24 volts, you lose that feature.
