Is there's any method to breathe from diaphragm?

i sing countertenor and wanted to know how to know if i was singing from diaphragm or not....any method that fastly strengthen my diaphragmatic breathing...i'll have singing lessons next week but wanted to know.Thanks

  1. First off you use your diaphragm whether you want to or not.

    I've learned that heavy gasping as if you're very suprised gets air faster in your lungs and you'll utilize your diaphragm i suggest doing that for a few minutes and you'll notice the difference in your breathing, and when you go higher in full voice pull your lower abs in, your lower ab muscle should make your full voice high notes shaky and sound unstable which is natural until you get better. Hope this helps.


  2. our chorus teacher told us to lay on the floor and breathe deeply. It really helps and you begin to get used to it and do it all the time.

  3. Look in a mirror, if your shoulders are moving more than a millimeter, you are not. Also put your hand on your stomach, breath in...as you breath in---your stomach should be moving out. If it is not, then you are not breathing from the diaphragm. Try to MAKE yourself puch your stomach out as you breath in...your body should catch on.
