And of course you know that gambling is wrong,....otherwise nothing bad or wrong on your spare time unless you play and leave your prayers.

for board games you mentioned, i have read some religious talk that forbidens them because it hinder you from praying. (zekr).

I m not with this kind of opinion

but what i believe is that every behavior has its own outcomes according to the way we use it.

these kind of games are considered group games, so it enhances social interaction with peers in a POSITIVE way, and enhances their friendship.

if it leads them to being hostile to each other, then it is not accepted -or haram- and that's why gambling is haram, because it poisons people relationships with each other

also these games gives personal satisfaction and increases the serotonin levels in your brain. specially the intellectual ones like chess.

The main point that it doesn't hinder his social interaction, or his work and study efforts. if it does, then it is considered some type of addiction. and this is an indication for other problems in his personal life... like career frustration, financial stress, emotional disappointments. and in this sense he must seek the appropriate behavioral and cognitive therapy after indicating the real problem not the symptoms

In addition: I want to talk about kids games, they are not only for entertainment they are also important educational tool. if you reviewed how games (or toys) are rated through on-line shopping website, you will find them rated according to 3 factors:

1- durability

2- entertainment

3- educational

Gambling is haram, so even a game that is usually halal, if it is played for money will be turned into haram.

I will say you have to keep your intention righteous with whatever game you choose to play.  You know what the rules and requirements of Islam are, the game should be in accordance with that.
