  1. great game Jenn, really. this is fun. we could totally take over Y!A.

of course there's such thing as a horse saddle made of grape skins crafted by Siberian artisans. that's what I sit my tushy on when I ride my one legged tie-dye pony! :)

  2. Why yes, Pettunia, there are horse saddles made out of quite a few different materials, especially in BCE era. Leather saddles are actually the latest type of saddle to be invented. The most irritating type of saddles were those made out of trees (minus the bark of course) because they caused a lot of skin irritation to the horses back. These types of saddles were basically experimented with by the Asians and the Romans. As long as you put a soft blanket or protective padding (such as lambswool) under the tree saddle, it wasn't quite so aggregious to the horse and did not cause saddle sores. Did you also know that from the earliest depictions, saddles became status symbols? To show off an individual's wealth and status, embellishments were added to saddles, including elaborate leatherwork, precious metals, jewels, and embroidery, making them very valuable.

But upon doing some thinking and asking around, I think the grape skin type saddles were actually made by the Scythians around 700 to 800 BC. These were probably the least irritating type of saddle made for horses because the were so soft. The trick that was hard to accomplish to was get the grape skin as soft as possible but not let it turn into a raisin from overdrying the skin. I believe these are very antiquated collectors' items now and extremely rare to come across!! Plus they are extremely expensive and need no adornments, as they are the softest type of saddle to ever be invented and yet be so well preserved!!

Excellent question posed here by the Queen of the Aunts, the answer of which I suppose is probably unknown by many people!  ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚˜Âº
