Is there a 220V outlet thermostat for a window AC unit?

I have a 220V window AC unit. It's an old one, but still works very well. I am looking for a thermostat that I could put between the AC unit and the outlet. I have found 110V outlet thermostats, but not a 220V. Does anyone know of one?

  1. No, and the reason why is the thermostat is built into the air conditioner(near the expansion valve. So why add another???

  2. I take it this old A/C unit doesn't have a working thermostat on it...

Here's the trick:  An air conditioner pulls a lot of current.  Notice that the power cord is thicker than most other appliances, even at 220V.  So you're probably going to have to create a thermostat for this thing that behaves much like one for a whole-house AC system.

    Here's what you need:

    A simple wall mounted thermostat.

    A 12V or 24V door bell transformer

A relay with 30A contacts that is energized by the same voltage as the door bell transformer.

You'll mount the thermostat on the wall someplace not too close to the AC unit so it senses general room temperature, not the cold air coming out of the AC.

Provide a plug for the bell transformer, and run bell wire from it to the thermostat and then back to the relay so the thermostat turns the relay on and off.

Provide a plug and outlet on the contacts of the relay so that the relay switches power on and off to the AC unit.
