My entertainment center is 39 inches across and I am trying to fit the largest possible TV into this area. Currently, I can only go up to a 37" LCD but am hoping there are some 40" LCD's out there less than 39 inches across.

  1. as previously answered the measurement is diagonally measured.  The rub however is you are probably trying to fit a wide screen TV into a space for a standard TV format.  The widescreen limit is probably 37", but you could probably fit a 42" or larger into the space but it must be a standard TV format TV, not easy to find anymore or in HD.    good luck

  2. Many 40" LCD HDTVs are wider than 39". I've been through this search for eactly the same reason and the only 40" LCD HDTV that I have measured that is less than 39" (38.6") is the Sony KDL-40S3000 (2007 model).

I see from a web search that the following are also less than 39":

    Sony KDL-40Z4100 (2008 model)

    Sony KDL-40W4100 (2008 model)

    Sony KDL-40V4100 (2008 model)

    Samsung LNT-4061F (2007 model)

  3. I agree with the first responder regarding diagaonal vs horizontal/across measurements.  I did a random search of a couple of 40" LCDs and they are about 38" accross, which would certainly fit into a 39 inch opening, as long as the height was not exceeded.

  4. TVs and monitors are measured diagonally from corner to corner, as opposed to top-to-bottom or right-to-left.
