Is there a DVR that behaves just like a VCR, except it records to a drive?

In other words...no paid service. Just a box like a VCR, with a TV tuner built in. The ability to pass the TV signal through to the TV so it can display a different channel that is being recorded. Programmable recording just like a VCR.

  1. look at your local walmart. they have 2 different models. i have one that cost me about $200 but its well worth it. it is a dvd burner with a built in hard drive that works just like dvr. program to record to dvd or the dvr your choice. you can also record from the dvr to dvd if you want. this runs through the cable like a vcr does so you can pause and rewind if you want. the only problem is it only records one thing and when recording it is on the channel you're recording. to bypass this i just let it record a show on the dvr and watch another channel through the tv. hope this helps.

  2. What Wood8282 said plus get one with a digital tuner built in for  free over the air compatibility in the US (so it works after February 17, 2009 digital transition - cable or satellite no problem with this).
