Is there a Doctor Doctor in the house?

If an individual has a PhD of Medicine (a PhD of their specialty of MD) would they be considered a Doctor Doctor?

  1. Yeah, exactly as Zeep pointed out, one can have an MD, PhD, JD, MBA, MPH after their name but to use the title "Doctor" with such redundancy isn't common practice.  If one has a dual doctorate in medicine and another discipline, e.g. an MD, PhD, simply addressing them as "Doctor" is appropriate.


  2. I can't think of a medical specialty you can get a Ph.D. in, but I'm probably forgetting one.  There are certainly a lot of M.D./Ph.D.'s, though, and it would be kinda funny to call one "doctor doctor" whoever.
