Is there a Non-"Dish Network" DVR that works with Dish Network?

Does anyone know if there is a DVR that automatically records shows on Dish Network? Dish Network offers a DVR service but I want to avoid paying a monthly fee. I saw a Pioneer 810H DVR with built-in basic Tivo, but I don't know if Tivo's electronic program guide gets satellite channels.

  1. Tivo has more of a subscription price, like 12/mo compared to 2-5 a month from Dish. If you have the top 200 or better then why buy a tivo unit for maybe $100 bucks when you can get one from dish for only 2 dollars a month.

On February 1st the prices are going up the but the DVR advantage packs are going to stay the same.  So, pay 2 bucks more if you have the top 200 for a price increase or pay 2 more and get the DVR included. (making the DVR FREE)

  2. Buy a series 1 or series 2 (but not series 3 or HD) tivo on ebay with lifetime service. (Tivo basic is very limited.) Tivo will work with dish (as long as your dish box can be controlled with an infrared remote. If your dish box will only work with a UHF remote, tivo won't work.

  3. sorry, satellite transmission is a 'closed" system. For now, you need to get a DVR from Dish.

(You may be able to use a Tivo with satellite services, but the TV guide will still be in the dish set-top and video quality will be worse). Just pay $5/month for a Dish DVR
