    I am assuming it is for playing movies? (.mov .avi .mpg etc)

  4. If you mean for watching different media formats, then yes.  VLC is a cross platform application that will play almost any video format out there.  It is a free download http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

  5. It depends on what kinds of files you are trying to open.  Some files only open with Quicktime.  Also keep in mind that Quicktime is an Apple product, and you are using one of their computers.

    VLC player plays many file types that Quicktime also plays, but not all of them.  It is free, however, and plays some files that Quicktime can't ;)

    Here's a version for the Mac OS X operating system.

    I use this program with the Windows version and it works well, I've never tried it for the Mac OS.  Good luck!
