  1. several things

-external HDD must be formatted in Fat32

-must be stored in a specific VIDEOS (all caps) folder for the PS3 to list them on the XMB

-some files won't play, the list is on the Ps3 site.

-you can install Linux on the Ps3, which you cna install VLc or many other video programs on that.

  2. The problem is that PS3's OS is a closed one. You can't install additional plug-ins. On www.pspvideo9.com there is a free converter which'll allow you to convert almost any movie into PS3's format.

  3. You can't install anything like that on the PS3. Sony has to approve everything that goes into the XMB operating system, so you won't be able to install plugins.

You can, however, install Linux on your PS3, which will let you install VLC player. The process is pretty difficult if you aren't very tech savvy, though.

  4. The problem is with your external harddrive, it is incorrectly formatted and so the PS3 will not recognize anything on it.

It must be formatted to a FAT32 file system for the PS3 to read it correctly.

Another note you can not add any dowloads to the PS3, this is controlled by sony. Which in my opion is a very good thing.
