  1. Humm don't think so.

There is a Bank of New York if you like.

  2. No there isn't. However you will only pay the fee your bank charges if you use a Paris bank ATM that has the same symbol as is on your card. You will not pay a fee to the Paris bank.

I use four different London banks during my visit last month to get 800GBP and only paid a total of $4.50.

If you use your creditcard (Visa or Mastercard), they will charge you about 2% to 5% as a transaction fee for converting your dollars into local currency on every transation.

Travelers check have to be converted to local currency, whoever does that will charge you a fee. Usually that is about 8% to 10% of your money. Not a good exchange rate if you ask me. On top of that, travelers check are becoming very unwelcome as they are a pain to work with for the locals.

  3. Not likely! However, to avoid fees, just use your Visa or MC to pay for everything you can, and use your Traveler's Checks to convert to local currency for pocket money.

  4. I bank with Washington Mutual here in the US, and used my ATM card that's tied to my checking account all over France (no there aren't any WaMu's).  The only problem I had was trying to withdraw too much at once.  I think the limit on my account was $300 per day and I was try to withdraw more than that when the conversion of Euros to Dollars took place.  The ATM just said "transaction denied" or something equally obscure.  Moral of the story: know that 100 Euros is about $135.

When you use an ATM, you will be charged a fee, but I think you'll still come out ahead over any of the other options (credit card, traveler's checks, or the dreaded currency exchange desk).

  5. Are you serious?  You are part of the reason a large part of the world believes Americans to be self-absorbed!

Maybe your headband on your avatar is too tight!
