Is there a beach town in Argentina near Buenos Aires?

From what I've found about buenos aires, it doesn't sound very beachy. I want to go somewhere that has public transportation to a nice beach area.

Mar del Plata is over 4 hours by car.  Pinamar, Carilo and some others are about 45 minutes closer and much better.  The beach season is over until at least late November for this year.

By flying, you can reach Punta del Este in half an hour.  If you're going to go through the whole deal of flying you mgiht as go to Florianopolis in Brazil.

There is one coastal area that is quite nice for the weekends and has a lot of islands in the River that you can visit - it's called Tigre and takes 30-40 minutes from Retiro Train Station in downtown BA.  There are many small boats that can take you to the islands in the river, It si quite nice nature, but certainly not a wild, partying Brazilian beach town atmosphere.
