  1. Yes, there are plenty of tests out there, but they're not cut and dry.

DNA tests can't make definitive statements about your ancestry (i.e., you are 90 percent European and 10 percent Native American).  But nuclear DNA testing can tell you that you have some genes that are more likely to be Native American than something else.  Also, just because some of your lineage doesn't show up in your DNA doesn't mean it's not there.

  2. no...

  3. Yes there is. Follow the web sites listed below.

  4. Blood tests are old hat.  They use DNA today.  Blood contains DNA but so does your hair, your saliva, skin etc.  Actually you are related to people by your DNA not necessarily by your blood except for the fact that your blood contains DNA.   They usually get your DNA by having you to swab the inside of your cheek with a little device sort of like a qtip.

Y DNA is passed solely from father to son.

Mitochondrial DNA is passed from mother to both her sons and daughters but only her daughters pass it on to their children.

Most of your DNA is autosomal. You get it 50-50 from both parents.  It is the only DNA that relates a female to her father or a male to his paternal grandmother or maternal grandfather.   However, they are not using autosomal for genealogy testing right now. SMGF plans to start sometimes in about the next year.

    Another company is FamilyTreeDNA

Now, if you mean your ethnic heritage, the ones that do it do not give you a specific country. They can identify you from Northern Europe, East Asia etc etc.

  5. There are many websites devoted to this, some specialize, such as blacks, Jews, etc.  I used www.familytreedna.com.  They sent me a kit with 2 swabs, I swabed the inside of my cheeks, returned the kit, and in about 3 weeks I received a printed report.  I also have access to my own web page on their site.

Family Tree explains the basics of DNA, with the mtDNA (mother - mother) and yDNA (father - father), maps showing where your ancestors came from, etc.

  6. Look at Family Tree DNA site

You can find out all you need to know there.
